About the College

The College is the professional body and postgraduate educational provider for specialist General Practitioners and Rural Hospital Medicine Practitioners. Our 75+ staff support around 5,800 specialist GPs in 1,000 practices across the country. Our events are where members learn, connect, celebrate and are recognised, including the annual conference, the fellowship and awards ceremony, webinars and member events throughout the year.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a new high-profile function that brings together standout event delivery, strong commercial thinking and meaningful partnership growth. You will have the mandate to shape the College’s annual conference and wider events programme, build sponsorship and exhibition opportunities, manage budgets with confidence, and create experiences that deliver real value for members, partners and the College.

You will own the College’s events from first plan to final reconciliation. Four key areas define the job:

  • Project and event delivery. Lead the annual conference end-to-end, plus the fellowship and awards ceremony, webinars and member events. Critical path, milestones, governance reporting, speaker and delegate logistics, risk, health and safety, accessibility and contingency planning.
  • Commercial mindset, partnerships and budget. Own event budgets and revenue targets end to end. Build and grow commercial partnerships, shape sponsorship and exhibition packages and pricing, negotiate supplier terms, and treat every event as a commercial proposition as well as a member experience.
  • Relationships and partnerships. Build enduring relationships with venues, PCOs, suppliers, sponsors and exhibitors, and work with our Medical Director on a conference programme that meets member needs.
  • Data and measurement. Set the measures for attendance, satisfaction, revenue, cost recovery and return on investment, and report to the baselines for key stakeholders across the College.
  • Culturally safe: You will also make sure our events are culturally safe and reflect the College’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations including tikanga, pōwhiri and mihi whakatau where appropriate.

What you will bring

  • Five or more years delivering large events end to end, including multi-day conferences with several hundred attendees.
  • Strong project management including planning, critical paths, workstream coordination and governance reporting.
  • Proven budget ownership from forecasting to tracking, variance reporting and delivering to financial targets.
  • Commercial capability across developing and delivering sponsorship and exhibition packages and building partnerships that generate sustainable revenue.
  • Experience selecting, contracting and managing venues, PCOs and event suppliers.
  • Working knowledge of event technology including registration, ticketing, event apps and hybrid delivery.
  • Sound knowledge of event health, safety, accessibility and risk requirements.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with strong stakeholder service skills.
  • Confident, considered use of approved AI tools within privacy, security and responsible AI expectations.

You will thrive here if you are

  • Commercially minded, with a real feel for the levers behind event profitability.
  • Calm, decisive and practical under pressure, particularly in the final week before an event.
  • Excellent at planning and organisation across many moving parts and deadlines.
  • Detail-focused, especially where member and sponsor experience is concerned.
  • Self-motivated and independent, and genuinely collaborative.
  • Committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity and culturally safe event practice.
  • Willing to travel and work outside standard hours during event periods.
